Designing for Diplomacy
At the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute, I had the opportunity to design and develop an internal website for the Leadership and Management School. This high-profile project served an elite audience, including senior diplomats, and the Secretary of State. The site played a vital role in delivering specialized training and briefings.
Challenges and Approach
The Leadership and Management School’s unique stature required a website that balanced innovation with gravitas. My goal was to create a design that reflected the modern needs of its users while honoring the institution's rich history and tradition.
Contemporary Graphics: To convey professionalism and forward-thinking values, I incorporated clean lines, modern typography, and intuitive navigation.
Historical Elements: Recognizing the importance of tradition, I integrated a sidebar featuring historical figures and milestones, providing a visual reminder of the school’s storied legacy.
User-Centric Design: The site’s architecture was carefully planned to ensure seamless access to training materials, schedules, and resources, catering to the busy schedules of high-ranking officials.
Outcome
The website was enthusiastically received by stakeholders, with its design striking just the right balance of modernity and tradition. Its success directly led to a follow-up assignment, where I collaborated with the Under Secretary of State on another web project. This project underscored my ability to design impactful websites that resonate with high-profile audiences, combining strategic design thinking with attention to detail.
